Unhappy that no one adores them anymore, the Rainbow Fish seeks out the wise Octopus, who helps the fish learn that it's far better to be admired for being kind than for being beautiful. When Rainbow Fish refuses to share their vibrant, shimmering scales, the whole ocean seems to turn against the vain creature. With shiny, multi-colored scales, Rainbow Fish is the most beautiful fish in all of the ocean, and the only one of their kind. The absolute highlight to the show however in my mind and the playing was phenomenal was Jack and Jorma joining the band for a wonderful rendition of Dixie chicken in which they managed to meld Tennessee Jed for a perfect choice of tunes to do with those two.Youth Theatre Musical - A Penguin Project Production I was also stoked about the opportunity to see Hot Tuna who as only a 59 year old I had missed any opportunities to see them in the past. So the chance to see them go back to those Wonderful days was irresistible. I’ve seen this band in various different carnations but was too young to see them before Lowell died. You don’t know as I said fairly close to the front row at the Fox Theatre this Tuesday evening to watch Little Feat relive their great live album waiting for Columbus with only two original members but a fine band nonetheless I thought I was being picky by complaining about the sound quality but evidently after reading other peoples reviewsI was right on the money. Tim WatsonWilliams from San Francisco, California But if you hate instrumental solos, bad sound and unintelligible lyrics, try another show and venue. ![]() In summary, go see Little Feat if you are a fan of the band. There were many extended solos, which as a musician I can usually enjoy, but the sound system rendered the solos and many of the lyrics unintelligible. And as the show progressed, it became obvious that the ventilation/cooling system was having a hard time cooling the crowd on a hot night. Sitting in the Balcony was difficult, as I am 6'2" tall, and the seats were painful for this older body and are clearly build for people under 5'8" tall - no leg room worse than a Frontier Air passenger seat. And I know the music and words well, but the Taft Theatre sound system and mix made it at times hard to listen to. I first saw Little Feat at Hara Arena in Dayton on their original Waiting for Columbus tour (I have the t-shirt around here somewhere). LOVE THE BAND, BUT SOUND SYSTEM MADE IT HARD TO LISTEN TO Please fire your sound guys, get different equipment, do something!!! Learn from the mistakes. I would love to give this a good review as I have been a Little Feat fan for multiple decades, but can't do it. ![]() Since they were mostly acoustic there sound was fine, but the main act.could not hear the horn section at all, and they had a lot of nice solo's, the drums ruled the night to the determent of all else. Hot Tuna the opening act were great, bassist Jack Casady (one of the best in the business) was in rare and playful form. This is an all star band that has multiple decades of entertainment experience.but no matter how good you are a bad soundscape will doom you. Issue at point there was too much bass, minimal treble and absolutely no midrange. However Little Feats sound crew were left wanting and it did not matter what listening point one was in, they were all all equally bad. Anyone who plays here knows that there will be good "house" sound. ![]() This venue is built for proper sound amplification, David Crosby remarked "wow" after he heard how his voice was amplified. ![]()

She simply wanted a better life, despite the illicit means she attempted to do so- the first of many also searching for meaning in said lives not unlike Spike, and so death is present from the start. In the very first episode, or session, Asteroid Blues, he chases down the red- eye dealer, Ansimov, only to watch his associate, Katerina shoot him dead- and be brutally killed in turn by ISSP forces. (Side note- does it seem like a lot of tragic lovers are named “Julia” or “Juliet”? I blame Shakespeare.) In the backdrop of these three groupings, death sits in the foreground like the Grim Reaper it is so often characterized as, not just because of the constant and steady danger Spike and the rest of the crew find themselves in (thanks largely to their profession of choice), but also as this sort of haunting inevitability that hovers through the show- and specifically in Spike-centric bits. In Spike’s case, his character is driven by three groups, or rather, phases of time in particular- his past, represented by the Red Dragon Syndicate and archrival Vicious his present- which starts off as simply Jet Black but grows to include the newest members of the Bebop (namely Faye and Ed, and to a lesser extent, Ein), and his future, where Spike’s hope is held in the dream that one day he might see Julia, his love, again. Through the show, those aims are made clearer by way of clean plot progression, development of character arcs, and the sequence of events that happens. Of course, any discussion of Cowboy Bebop and its characters starts with the idea that our main crew is searching for meaning in their own individual lives and ways. Whatever the descriptor, Spike is his own man, and he’s worth looking into. Just who is Spike Spiegel? There’s a straightforward answer that he’s a runaway member of a powerful crime syndicate a feared bounty hunter and ace pilot a lost lover floating aimlessly among the stars, a lazy bum who only does things when they benefit him, and for a select few, he’s a friend. ![]() So here’s yours truly, ready to explore the man that is Spike! Spike curiously enough is the first main protagonist to be written about in the “What’s in a Character” series, and he’s worthy of the title indeed he’s a far more interesting lead than most leading men in anime between his backstory, dynamism as a character, and general coolness he’s the type of guy who would know that, but if you asked him, he might look indifferent. Once again, another unique character comes to the fore of analysis today: Spike Speigel! After trips to the Fire Nation (Zuko) and the Mystery Shack (Stan Pines), it’s time to venture into our solar system, Cowboy Bebop-style, to meet (or re-acquaint with) one of the galaxy’s most feared bounty hunters (sorry Boba Fett) and an all-around terrific character. ![]() ![]() ![]() 1, #17–19, 1995) as an alter-ego of King Mob, one of that title's main characters, who in literary terms is reported to have been based on Stargrave. Like Near Myths though, Pssst! was cancelled before it was published, leading Morrison to "feel that was some kind of albatross". Morrison said "I'd done a new Gideon Stargrave story. In the early 1980s, Morrison and Tony O'Donnell went to London for a meeting with the publishers of Pssst! magazine, who said they wanted to publish Morrison's Gideon Stargrave stories as well as some of their other work. Though unpublished, "Entropy Concerto" featured a second version of Stargrave, with a " Beatles '65 haircut and Swinging London vibe" which Morrison says "was much better, in that I can still read the stuff without cringing". Near Myths was cancelled after issue five, before any more Stargrave stories were published, but according to Morrison there were "dozens of unpublished comics and prose stories" which they "wrote obsessively when was 17" which they subsequently found very embarrassing to read, calling it "pretty embarrassing stuff – the work of a seventeen-year-old who doesn't get out of the house". Parts two and three were included back to back at the start of Near Myths #4 (1979), and ended with a teaser panel for "Gideon Stargrave in The Entropy Concerto". The first published Stargrave story appeared in Near Myths #3 (December 1978), as part one of "Gideon Stargrave in The Vatican Conspiracy", written and drawn by Morrison. In 2001, there were even a lot of shark experts that questioned what we were filming. I was very excited by it because I knew that once the world saw these images of these white sharks blasting out of the water, it would be a complete game-changer. I go, "This can't be real." And he told me, "Yeah, it happens almost every day." So based on conversations with my friend Chris Fallows, I had a pretty good idea that we'd be able to capture that. I'd never seen a great white breach before until a friend of mine sent me a video from South Africa, and I almost thought it was photoshopped. Obviously the first Air Jaws changed the face of Shark Week, but back to before it premiered, was there any nervousness on your part about making it? That you wouldn't capture this behavior you had heard about or that audiences wouldn't connect with it as strongly as they did?Īir Jaws was definitely brand-new territory. Shark Week Revival (Photo: Discovery Channel) I never thought I'd be doing it 30 years in a row, but here we are. So my interest grew by just basically getting in the water with them and seeing how incredible they are, how smart they are, beautiful they are, streamlined, athletic, and it just grew from there. Then an opportunity came along 30 years ago to get involved with his fledgling series on Discovery Channel called "Shark Week."ĭuring the first couple of years when I was working on the series, I became reacquainted with the shark, but still had this Jaws thing hanging in the back of my head that they were man-eaters, killers, but it only takes a few dives with one of these animals to understand that there's a lot more to the shark than what's been portrayed in movies like Jaws. For years, I worked in entertainment, I worked in television news. So I would say that I, initially, was scared to death of sharks. I actually saw it in the theater when it came out and was completely floored and blown away, terrified by that movie. Do you remember when it was that your casual interest in sharks became more of a passion? Plenty of other people, however, never lose that wonder of them. In my experience, everyone loves sharks when they're kids and when some people get older, they lose that fascination with them. So I don't know what the correlation is, but I think there might be a show there someday. And then South Africa, you've got a ton of great whites and you have incredible wine there. A lot of them up off of Northern California, near Napa Valley. They're in New Zealand, great red wine there. Wherever there's great white sharks, there's usually really good red wines. And here's a fun factoid for you that most people don't know. Luckily, great whites seem to live in really cool places like New Zealand and South Africa. Yeah that sounds miserable to be on a boat in South Africa watching 20-foot sharks leap out of the ocean right near you for days on end.Ĭan't complain about that. We actually start naming the sharks, not sure if that's good or bad. It's a little bit of fun for us out in the field when we're floating on the boat for day after day after day. We had one shark named "Rasta." He was pretty mellow, so you can see how that works. Interestingly, great white sharks have personalities a lot like people do, so on occasion, we give them names, and usually it's befitting of some aspect of their personality that stands out. ![]() Wow, I was just expecting a favorite species so having a specific shark is even more impressive. My favorite shark is Colossus, the great white shark, that breached, flew out of the water, about 10 feet away from me in South Africa as I was laying prone on a craft called the "seal sled." Definitely my favorite shark of all time. ![]() Jeff Kurr: I absolutely have a favorite shark. Playing Favorites (Photo: Discovery Channel)Ĭ: This could be the toughest question or it could be the easiest question, but do you have a favorite shark? ![]() ![]() ![]() Unusual shapes and circular lawns are a little trickier. If the lawn is a square or rectangular shape, start at the edge, using it as a guide to create a straight line, mow up and down and slightly overlap at each turn. The ideal length is anywhere between 3 and 4 centimetres, and grass should never be trimmed by more than one third of its length. Cutting your lawn too short will make your stripes lose definition. To start, make sure to set your mower to the right height. These are a common tool, useful for levelling and seeding your lawn. If you do not have a roller mower, or striping kit available, you may still be able to create stripes with a hand pushed garden roller. Can you stripe a lawn without a striping kit? Their results, however, are slightly less apparent, as they do not have the weight to flatten the grass to the same extent as a roller. They are weighted bars that attach to the back of your mower, to perform the same task as a roller. However, striping kits are available in the market. Unfortunately, a mower without a roller will not be able to create stripes. Ride-on cylinder mowers are available in the sporting market, and are often used on golf courses. As most domestic ride-on mowers are rotary, they are not equipped with a roller. The type of mower you own is irrelevant, as long as the machine is equipped with a roller. Can you stripe a lawn with a riding mower? However, the resulting stripe will be less defined and not quite as sharp. It's much harder to get a stripe with a wheeled rotary mower but not impossible. These are usually petrol powered machines and can either be rotary or cylinder.Ĭylinder mowers work best when it comes to creating a sharp stripe effect, as they cut the grass in a scissor-like motion. To obtain the perfect striped effect, you will need a lawn mower with at least 1 roller. Necessary ToolsĪ lawn mower is an essential tool for good lawn maintenance. Once you’ve got the technique down, the possibilities are endless. Diagonal stripes can make your garden appear bigger, while more irregular spaces may benefit from wavy lines that follow the contour of the space. How you stripe depends on the shape of your garden and the effects you want to obtain. Additionally, wet blades are more likely to tear than cut cleanly, opening the door for fungus to settle in. When the grass is dry, the blades stand taller, making it easier to mow evenly. Mowing your grass when wet is likely to result in an uneven and damaged lawn. Make sure to free your lawn of any bits and bobs like twigs ,rock, and toys, that might spoil the look and even damage your mower. The shorter the blades, the harder it will be to bend the grass in the desired direction. Before you Stripe Make sure the lawn is long enoughįor the optimal effect, make sure that your lawn has a good length before you stripe. You can learn more about each of these processes on our blog. You’ll also want to regularly aerate and scarify your lawn, to ensure that it has the right soil conditions for growth. ![]() ![]() Remove moss and weeds, water regularly, and encourage growth with a comprehensive feeding program, like the So & Mo Performance Liquid Lawn Feed. So make sure to take care of your lawn all year round. If you think striped lawns look lush and healthy, it’s because they probably are! Stripes will show and look best on a strong, dense, and healthy lawn. We’ll go into more detail about preparation, tools, and the correct method below. The lighter stripe is always the direction pointing away from you and the darker stripe pointing towards you.īut before you can start mowing, you must ensure that your lawn is in good, healthy condition, at the right length, and that you have the necessary tools. As the lawn is mown, the roller angles the grass blades in opposite directions creating the 2 different lighting effects when you look at the lawn. To get stripes in your lawn, you’ll need to mow your lawn in different directions with a lawn mower that has a roller. The blades that are bent away from the sun will reflect the light creating bright stripes, while the blades that are bent towards the light will create shadows, making the stripes appear darker. The striping effect is created by pushing the grass in opposite directions in order to influence the way in which sunlight reflects on the blades. In this blog we go over the preparation, tools, and methods you need to know about to obtain the perfect look. With a bit of care and the right lawn mower, they are easier to obtain than you might think. Striped and patterned lawns can be truly impressive. ![]() |
